2023 CRYSTALLINE SERIES: About these works
My newest series of work is inspired by the inner beauty of geodes and their organic formations with cavities of sparkling crystals, bands of colorful agate, and precious gemstones.
Emulating the textures, shapes and unique characteristics of these subspherical rock structures is my most challenging technique to date. Each glass work is individually formed with hand-crushed shards of glass, arranged and layered at varying densities to create distinctive shapes with unique textures and finishes. The process requires a steady allocation of space and weight in the layers for each composition to meld and form as intended through the firing cycles. I also have to create imbalance within the structure in order to achieve its desired irregularities and open-air spaces, all ultimately connected by drips and strings of melted glass and clusters of banded shards. It's a delicate balance with a lot of risk, but the reward is worth it.
I hope that each glass work captures the incredible experience of breaking open what looks like just an ordinary rock only to discover something unexpected and beautiful. Each one is uniquely different and, to me, it's a reminder that we should all celebrate our own individuality and also take time to find the unique qualities in others that aren't always apparent from the outside.

This tall, multilayer vessel features design elements that I created and fired in a separate process before incorporating into my final composition. It has gradual transparency from the base that leads to more semi-translucent and opaque colors at the top. Natural light or an up-lit base brings vibrancy to the colors. I love that it has a contemporary feel mixed with an overall bright garden motif, so it's bold without being too dramatic.

I've spent some time with family friends at Lake Lure surrounded by the beautiful NC mountains. My goal with this vessel was to capture a little of that crisp mountain air, clear sky with white clouds above, and the way the water sparkles from the sun's reflection.

This commission request was to design and create a large glass vessel for a for a very personal purpose. Here is the message the client shared with gallery owner Jacqueline Bassett:
"I asked Elijah to create a vase for me, with tiger lilies, some grass and a beautiful blue sky. I am planning to give this to my daughter for her birthday. It's in memory of her great uncle and their last visit together before he passed away. He lived on a farm and he took her for a tractor ride. Along the way, he stopped to pick a tiger lily for her. It was a beautiful day with the bluest sky, and since that time her favorite flower is the tiger lily. The vase in incredibly beautiful. This touches my soul and brings me back to that moment with her great uncle. Elijah brought my vision to life." - Michelle
There are many reasons why I love to create art. But one of the most meaningful reasons is because art can touch people's lives and hold memories in the most unique way. Having opportunities to be part of that is the most rewarding gift of being an artist.
